All around us we see people coughing and sneezing. The onset of winter especially makes people more susceptible to this infection.

Common cold and flu viruses usually enter our body through our nose. However, the inner lining of our nasal passages has sophisticated defenses against these germs.

But, when the temperature drops, the cold air prevents the secretion of mucus from our nose which allows viruses to enter our respiratory system. These viruses love cool temperatures, making us prone to the common cold when the temperature drops.

Sometimes your airways can become irritated by allergens, pollutants or toxins in the environment, which can cause a dry cough.

Most of the time, people include medicines and steam to get some relief, but some Ayurvedic natural home remedies can also reduce cough and soothe sore throat. Here we help you with some Ayurvedic tips to control cough and cold.


In Ayurveda, tulsi or tulsi is called mother nature’s medicine and queen of herbs. Tulsi leaves boost the body’s natural defenses against common colds and coughs.

Tulsi slows the growth of infection as it encourages the development of antibodies. It helps clear the airways.

Consuming Tulsi tea daily has a calming effect and reduces stress.

Tulsi tea

  • 7 to 10 basil leaves
  • 2 to 3 cloves
  • 2 to 3 cardamom pods
  • 300 to 500 ml of water
  • honey (optional)

Recipe: After adding water to a pan put it on a high flame. Add basil leaves, cloves and cardamom and let the mixture simmer for 5-7 minutes. Next, remove the pan from the heat and strain the tea into a cup. For taste, you can add honey to the tea.


Mulethi, often called sweetwood, is an aromatic traditional medicinal plant that provides flavor to teas and other liquids. It is commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine and is believed to cure respiratory and digestive problems. Additionally, it is well known for boosting immunity and keeping infections and diseases at bay.

How to prepare mulethi kadha?

  • Take a few tulsi leaves, 1/4 teaspoon of mullethi powder, a pinch of cinnamon powder, and black pepper powder in 1 cup of boiling water and boil the mixture for 5 minutes.
  • After transferring to a cup add 1 teaspoon of honey.
  • Eat twice a day on this strict day.

Saunth or dry ginger powder is known as a nutritional powerhouse that has strong anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and antioxidant properties that help nourish the throat. Additionally, saantha is part of the long traditional Ayurvedic use in Ayurvedic medicine, it is usually consumed in the form of curd or churan.

How to prepare South Gully?

  • Add 2 to 3 tbsp of desi ghee in a pan. Reduce the flame.
  • Add few teaspoons of jaggery powder and let it melt. Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of saunth powder. Mix well.
  • Give it some time to settle.
  • Make bite-sized balls.


Giloy, also known as Amrita or Guduchi in Hindi, is a heart-shaped plant that resembles a betel leaf.

It helps in treating colds and coughs caused by allergic reactions to polluted air, dust or smoke. Additionally, it helps in treating colds and tonsillitis. It is also the best herb for boosting immunity which helps keep infections at bay.

Drink the juice

Take two tablespoons of guilloche juice with warm water in the morning on an empty stomach.

  • Make a cup of black tea as usual.
  • Add a little cinnamon powder.
