Indian scientists and medical professionals are working tirelessly to find a cure for the recently discovered tomato flu.

A viral illness known as tomato flu or tomato fever has been observed in India since May 2022.

The disease was first reported in Kerala’s Kollam district. And so far, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Odisha have detected around 90 cases each.

Children under the age of 5 are commonly affected by this unusual illness known as tomato flu.

Lancet Respiratory Medicine states that there is no specific drug to treat tomato flu, which is contagious and self-limiting.

The virus that causes hand, foot and mouth disease may have a new mutation, but it is not fatal.

What is tomato flu?

A rare viral illness called “Tomato Flu” is currently on the rise in India. A unique case of hand, mouth and foot disease, this illness is characterized by the appearance of painful blisters that can grow red and tomato-shaped.

Enteric viruses are responsible for this unusual illness. Adults are usually stronger immune system and metabolism, children aged 1 to 9 years are more susceptible to tomato flu or tomato fever.

Symptoms of tomato flu

Doctors think that dengue or chikungunya fever in children can turn into tomato flu. According to estimates, the initial symptoms of tomato flu are similar to those of any other viral infection. For example:

  • Sudden rise in body temperature
  • Terrible body aches
  • Redness or rash on the skin that is persistently itchy
  • Blisters
  • Fatigue and light-headedness

Other symptoms of tomato flu include severe mouth sores, rash and itching on the hands, feet and buttocks, swelling of the joints, nausea and dehydration.

Due to similar symptoms, tomato flu is sometimes mistaken for a coronavirus, although experts have shown that this virus is not related to SARS-CoV-2.

Treatment for tomato flu

According to reports, tomato flu or fever is a self-limiting illness, meaning it often resolves on its own without the need for treatment.

As a result, there are no specific drugs in the market that can be used to treat or cure the illness.

Isolation of patients with the unusual disease is recommended as it is easily transmitted from person to person and is easily contagious.

Comparable to chikungunya or dengue, the main course of therapy for a patient with tomato flu or tomato fever is similar.

Patients are given a balanced diet and plenty of fluids to help them stay hydrated. Common medications such as paracetamol or aspirin are recommended to lower body temperature and relieve body pain.

Focusing on exercise and personal hygiene is recommended, including removing the rash and using a wet sponge to avoid rashes or rashes.

Prevention of tomato flu

Controlling the spread of tomato flu is the goal of preventive interventions.

Below are some simple strategies to stop the spread of the disease:

  • Hygienic conditions and proper sanitation should be prioritized.
  • Although tomato flu rarely causes death, medical intervention is still necessary.
  • In case of infection, isolation is essential.
  • Children who are infected should avoid social contact.
  • It is better not to scratch the rash and blisters.
  • Sick children should be given warm baths or showers.
  • Eat a balanced diet and get enough rest for quick recovery.
