What causes vaginal itching?

Several infections commonly cause vaginal itching and burning. In the following situations, vaginal discharge is also present along with burning sensation in the vagina:

  • sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
  • Vaginal yeast infection
  • Biologic vaginosis

Other causes of vaginal irritation and discharge are:

  • Estrogen deficiency, and menopause (end of menstruation)
  • A tampon or loose object in the vagina
  • Use of everyday products such as detergents, fabric softeners, feminine sprays, creams, lotions, contraceptive foams or creams containing chemicals.

Some home remedies for vaginal itching include:

Tea tree oil and coconut oil

Apply warm coconut oil to the vagina to reduce itching and burning. You can also soak the pelvic area in a warm water bath with a few drops of tea tree oil. Tea tree oil should be used with caution as excessive use may cause a burning sensation.

Bathe with baking soda

Using baking soda in the bath can reduce skin irritation and help treat yeast infections. According to a study, baking soda has antifungal properties that can destroy microorganisms that cause discomfort.

You can apply baking soda paste on the affected skin or add 1/4 cup to a bucket of water for your bath.

Greek yogurt

Yeast infections can often be treated at home using Greek yogurt. Yogurt with probiotics encourages the growth of good bacteria in the vagina. These bacteria can eliminate some yeasts while protecting vaginal health.

According to research, using yogurt suppositories can help prevent these infections.

Cotton underwear

If you experience any vaginal or vulvar discomfort, cotton underwear can be helpful. Since cotton underwear is breathable, it can help reduce irritation and skin disorders.

Since yeast thrives in poorly ventilated spaces, wearing 100% cotton underwear can help prevent yeast infections.

Rinse with apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is considered a miracle cure for vaginal itching as it has very strong antifungal and antibacterial properties. It balances the pH level of the vagina and hence is said to be a great remedy for relief.

Half a cup of apple cider vinegar can be mixed into your bath water and you can soak or rinse the area for relief.


An itchy vagina can be avoided and treated by maintaining adequate vaginal hygiene.

When it comes to cleaning your vagina and vulva, sometimes less is more. You only need to wash the vulva or the outside of your vagina with some warm water as your vagina cleans itself naturally. Avoid using fragrance-free soaps, gels and cleansers. Additionally, stay away from anything marketed as feminine hygiene or intimate cleansers. Use only vaginal moist wipes as directed by your doctor.

According to some studies, soap and excessive washing of the vulva and vagina can actually cause more itching. Vaginal irritation, allergic reactions and infections can all be brought on by soaps and fragrances made with chemicals and preservatives.

What to avoid

When it comes to treating vaginal itching, the internet is filled with a lot of wrong advice that can do more harm than good.

Here are things you should never do:

Douches and feminine care products

Many feminine hygiene sprays contain fragrances and other chemicals that can irritate the sensitive skin around the vagina and vaginal area and worsen itching and inflammation.

Most medical professionals also advise against douching. Douching can alter the normal vaginal PH balance and flora (the bacteria that live there) and lead to irritation and itching.

Scented laundry detergent

Generic chemicals found in detergents and perfumes are also common causes of genital irritation. Check the ingredients of any soap you use for bathing or for your laundry. If it contains harsh chemicals and related ingredients, try to avoid it or make sure your clothes, especially your underwear, are washed thoroughly to get rid of the chemicals.
