Cindy Power needed 19 surgeries in five years for stomach problems and life-threatening infections. “I knew at least three times where she died at the operating table and they had to restart her heart,” her husband, Jim Powers, told investigative consumer correspondent Anna Warner at CBS Evening News.
Cindy’s illness led to a $ 250,000 bill, bankruptcy and finally foreclosure on the couple’s home in Texas.
According to an investigation by KHN and NPR, The Powers, now living in Colorado, is burdened with healthcare debt among more than 100 million people in the United States. Jim described Cindy’s illness as a five-year hell. The couple’s financial consequences were even more lasting.
