World Thyroid Day is observed on May 25 every year to raise awareness about thyroid and related diseases. One out of every ten Indian adults suffers from thyroid disease, more than 42 million people in India suffer from various types of thyroid disease.

The thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped gland in the neck, is one of the major endocrine glands in the body. It produces hormones that regulate metabolism and affect key physiological processes.

There are three primary thyroid diseases, namely:

  • Hypothyroidism (abnormal decrease in thyroid activity)
  • Hyperthyroidism (abnormal increase in thyroid activity)
  • Thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid gland)
  • Thyroid cancer

The Thyroid Federation International Theme has announced, “It’s not you. It’s your thyroid.” This year is World Thyroid Day. The theme focuses on making people aware of thyroid disease and understanding the common symptoms of thyroid. The theme aims to create more awareness among doctors about the effects of thyroid disease on their patients and the need to improve treatment.

Common symptoms of thyroid disease

Our energy levels and moods are regulated by the thyroid gland. It affects cell function and metabolism. Here are some common symptoms that a person with thyroid disease may experience:

  • Fatigue
  • Mood swings
  • Weight gain
  • Constipation
  • Dry skin
  • LDL increased
  • Pain in the joints
  • Thin hair
  • Muscle weakness
  • Swollen face

What is hyperthyroidism?

When your thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone, you have hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is caused by a number of diseases, the most common of which is Graves’ disease.

When your thyroid produces too much T3, T4, or both, its speed increases. Hyperthyroidism can be cured and the consequences can be avoided if diagnosed and treated early.

Causes of hyperthyroidism

  • Radiation therapy: Radiation therapy for head and neck cancer can induce thyroid damage and hypothyroidism.
  • Stomach acid deficiency: Low stomach acid affects digestion and therefore intestinal health.

  • Foods rich in iodine: Excessive iodine can make hyperthyroidism worse. This causes the thyroid gland to produce more thyroid hormones. One should avoid iodized salt, fish and shellfish, seaweed or kelp, dairy products, iodine supplements, red pigmented food products etc.
  • Gluten: May be gluten Inflammation And intestinal dysbiosis if you have an autoimmune disease like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Gluten elimination can help with the symptoms, however, these problems are no more than just gluten.

Milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, canned salmon, sardines, broccoli, fortified orange juice and kale are some of the calcium rich foods that can be included in the diet. Some vitamin D-rich foods include salmon and tuna, milk and some preserved dairy products (check labels), fortified soy milk and fortified cereals.

Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland is overactive and produces unnecessary thyroid hormones. People should follow their treatment plan and any fancy recommendations from their doctor.

Changing the diet can reduce the symptoms of hyperthyroidism. Some nutrients may support healthy thyroid function or reduce the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
