Introduction

Suicide is the most common cause of death among teenagers. A teenager or young person commits suicide every hour and a half. Moreover, many people are still trying to end their lives for some reason or the other.

Identifying, diagnosing and treating early depression and other mental health problems is the most effective way to prevent suicide.

World Suicide Prevention Day is celebrated around the world on 10 September every year. This year’s theme is Creating Hope Through Action.

Most of the time, people who commit suicide do so to end their suffering. These people are experiencing such intense pain that they feel hopeless and helpless. Suicidal thoughts are not voluntary. Instead of just ‘thinking about themselves’, they are experiencing a very serious mental health symptom that may be caused by a mental illness or a challenging situation in their life.

Trying to recognize suicidal thoughts in someone can be challenging, but recognizing and learning the signs can be the first step in suicide prevention. So here we help you with some tips that you need to know.

Tips that can help prevent suicide

Talk therapy

Sharing your thoughts with someone else can help you relax and clear your mind, as we all know that our mind is like a storehouse and it is quite natural to remove the junk from our mind. A suicidal person may tend to hold in emotions because they feel ashamed, guilty, or humiliated. About things that happen in their lives. Be encouraging and considerate, and offer to help them talk about their problems.

You never know what stage someone is at, so it’s not fair to make assumptions about their past and tell others that life can’t be the same and easy. Encourage them to take medicine

People who are suicidal or very depressed may not have the energy or motivation to seek treatment. Encourage the person to seek help from a support group, crisis center, faith community, teacher, or other reliable source if they do not want to see a doctor or mental health professional. You can offer encouragement and advice, but remember that it is not your responsibility to replace a mental health professional. Making wise decisions will help save their lives.

Suggest a workout

Physical exercise is an effective wellness modality and reduces symptoms of mental illness. Fitness will support increased amounts of serotonin, another brain-body chemical that results in positive moods and restful sleep, whether it’s going for a daily walk, working out at the gym, taking an online dance class, or doing something else. However, experts recommend exercising for 30 to 40 minutes two to five times per week. The most important thing is to have fun, which distracts the mind and keeps one motivated.

Focus on creating hope

Rays of hope can help people maintain a positive outlook and be motivated to take steps to reduce their mental health symptoms and suicidal thoughts. Medications, talk therapy, and stress-relieving exercises such as yoga, meditation, or journaling can be incorporated into the strategy. Reassure people honestly that some improvements in life may take time. Let them know that hard times won’t last forever. When people receive appropriate love, care and support, they feel good and feel good about themselves.

If someone admits they are feeling suicidal or is behaving in ways that make you think they might be suicidal, don’t minimize or ignore the situation.
